A year of DNA Fanconi testing

At the 2015 BRAT convention last June, the board of directors made the decision to DNA Fanconi Test all rescues aged 9 or younger. This decision was based on the new 2015 Gonto Protocol, first released at the convention, which showed that caught early, Fanconi Affected basenjis can now have a normal, active and symptom-free life. 

We were pleased to work with Dr. Gary Johnson at the University of Missouri, who for the first year, processed the DNA Fanconi Tests at a reduced charge. As of June 1, 2016, we have tested 96 fosters aged 9 years or younger.  Of those tested and whose tests have been processed, seven are Fanconi Affected, 20 are Fanconi Carriers and the remaining are Fanconi Clear. Three of the seven Fanconi Affected came from the Missouri Puppy Mill rescue last July.

For these precious seven, life just got a whole lot better. By following the 2015 Gonto Protocol, they should lead a relatively normal and long life.

The decision was a no-brainer for the board. But it has come at a cost.  We have expended over $4,500 just DNA Fanconi testing the dogs this first year.  The testing price is going up from the current $47 to $65.
